Spinner vs Bubble vs Directional Carb Caps: Which Fits?
Carb-cap names overlap between brands. Measure the banger rim and compare the cap's footprint, spout, seal, and air-channel design before relying on a label.
Spinner vs bubble vs directional carb caps
| Style | Airflow control | User movement | Terp pearls | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spinner | Angled channels create a fixed vortex | Usually set it in place | Designed to move compatible pearls | Buyer who wants automatic movement |
| Bubble | Spout aims air as the cap tilts | Rotate or rock by hand | May move pearls, but depends on technique and fit | Buyer who wants manual direction |
| Directional or topper | One or more direct air paths | Varies by design | Optional rather than the main purpose | Simple bucket control |
How to tell whether a carb cap fits your banger
Measure the bucket, not the joint
A rig's 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm joint size describes the connection below the banger. A carb cap fits the bucket at the top, so the relevant measurements are the outer rim, inner opening, bevel, cap contact area, and spout clearance. A 25mm bucket can still differ from another 25mm bucket at the rim.
Check flat versus beveled rims
A flat-top bucket needs a cap footprint broad enough to cover its opening and sit steadily. A beveled rim is shaped to meet a rounded cap and can create a close seal when their curves match. The manufacturer's recommended pairing is more useful than a claim that a cap is "universal."
Test the seal while everything is cold
Place the room-temperature cap on a clean, cool banger. It should sit without rocking off the edge. Draw gently through the rig and feel whether moving the cap changes resistance. Do not perform a fit test over hot quartz.
Give the spout and pearls clearance
A bubble cap's lower spout needs room to move without striking the bucket floor or wall. Spinner airflow also depends on open channels and correctly sized pearls. Read our terp pearl guide, then browse pearls and inserts by stated size.
How the three carb-cap airflow styles differ
Spinner caps: fixed channels, automatic movement
A spinner cap uses angled air paths to turn the incoming draw into circular movement. Honeybee's Tree Top specifications describe two angled internal channels and use with or without pearls. The cap remains mostly stationary while draw strength affects movement.
Choose a spinner only when the rim seals and the bucket has room for the intended pearls. If pearls barely move, clean the cap channels, reduce residue, verify pearl size and count, and check for an air leak before drawing harder.
Bubble caps: manual aiming
A bubble cap has a rounded body and a lower directional spout. The user tilts or rotates the bubble to aim air around the bucket. Honeybee's Honey Bubble page lists 25mm and 30mm options, but its marketing includes conflicting broad-fit language. Use the selected variant and real measurements rather than assuming universal compatibility.
Directional and topper caps: simple control
Directional is a functional description, not always a separate shape. A bubble spout directs air, and some spinner channels are directional too. In shopping terms, a "directional cap" often means a simpler cap whose hole or nozzle the user aims, while a topper sits over a bucket and controls intake without automatic pearl movement.
Honeybee's carb-cap type guide illustrates how manufacturer terminology crosses between bubble, directional, and spinner functions. Compare the actual geometry shown in the product images.

Honey Bubble Carb Cap
A glass bubble offered in 25mm and 30mm variants, with a listed 8mm spout. Tilt it to aim airflow. Check the selected size and spout clearance rather than treating it as universal.

Tree Top Spinner Carb Cap
A 30mm outer-diameter glass spinner with fixed angled channels. Honeybee recommends it with 25mm-style bangers such as Honey Mug and Honey & Milk Bevel, with or without pearls.

Vortex Bubble Carb Cap
A 30mm outer-diameter glass bubble listed for 25mm bangers. OSV does not label it universal. Choose it when you want a rounded cap with vortex-oriented airflow and room to manipulate the spout.

Triangle Spinner Carb Cap
A 30mm outer-diameter glass spinner with automatic airflow channels. Honeybee recommends it with 25mm bangers including Honey Hybrid and Flat Top formats.

Choose a spinner if:
- You regularly use correctly sized terp pearls.
- You want the cap to remain mostly stationary.
- Your banger has a rim the cap can seal.
- You will keep narrow airflow channels clean.
Choose a bubble if:
- You prefer to aim the air manually.
- The spout clears the inside of your bucket.
- You want to move airflow to different areas.
- You do not mind manipulating the cap during a draw.
Choose a topper if:
- You want a simpler cap for a regular bucket.
- Pearl movement is not the priority.
- You prefer fewer fit and airflow variables.
- The maker recommends it for your rim style.

Frequently asked questions
What does a carb cap do?
It restricts and directs incoming air at the banger opening. The seal and channel design change airflow, but a cap does not correct a mismatched or damaged banger.
Will any carb cap fit a 25mm banger?
No. "25mm" may refer to the bucket body, while the rim, bevel, inner opening, and cap contact area vary. Check the maker's pairing and measurements.
Do spinner caps need terp pearls?
No. Some, including Honeybee's Tree Top, are described for use with or without pearls. Pearls are the clearest reason to choose fixed vortex airflow, but they remain optional where the maker says so.
Is a bubble cap the same as a directional cap?
A bubble cap is directional because its spout can be aimed, but stores may use "directional cap" for other shapes too. Look at how the air path moves rather than relying only on the category name.
Why are my terp pearls not spinning?
Common causes include a poor rim seal, blocked cap channels, excess residue, pearls that are too large or numerous, a weak draw, or a bucket whose geometry does not support movement.
How do I clean a glass carb cap?
Let it cool completely, follow the maker's material guidance, soak or wipe with the recommended cleaner, clear narrow channels gently, rinse when instructed, and dry completely before use.
